Job Purpose

The role of Standards and Advice Officer sits within a busy team dedicated to providing advice and guidance on the professional conduct of veterinary surgeons and veterinary nurses. The Standards and Advice team delivers this service primarily through two key functions:

  • Standards: management of the work of the Standards Committee, which is responsible for the Code of Professional Conduct and supporting guidance.
  • Advice: providing professional conduct advice to the professions and other stakeholders based on the Code of Professional Conduct, the supporting guidance, and other relevant regulations.

 

Responsibilities:     

 

Advice

  1. Provide advice on professional conduct issues, particularly those originating from the Code of Professional Conduct and relevant regulations, by telephone and email.
  2. Manage a busy case load of advice queries, ensuring compliance with departmental KPIs for response times. 
  3. Uphold high standards of quality and ensure consistency in the advice provided.

 

Standards Committee

  1. Assist the Standards and Advisory Lead with the work of the Standards Committee and its subcommittees, which may include preparing agendas, arranging meetings, writing minutes and drafting papers.
  2. Provide support to the Standards and Advice Team, including active engagement in projects and working groups that report to the Standards Committee.
  3. Undertake other duties within the department and College, as requested by the Standards and Advisory Lead or the Head of Legal Services (Standards).

 

Ethics Review Panel

  1. Provide secretariat support and undertake general management of the work of the RCVS Ethics Review Panel, including (but not limited to); day-to-day processing of applications, drafting letters based on feedback from the Panel, and frequent meetings with the Chair of the Panel.
  2. Shared responsibility for planning the AGM, including drafting papers/agendas, generating statistics, and writing minutes.

 

Development of best practice

  1. Assist the Standards and Advisory Lead with projects relating to the development of internal protocols and guidance.
  2. Assist the Standards and Advisory Lead with analysis of advice files, where required.
  3. Assist the Standards and Advisory Lead with in-house and external training, where required.

 

Essential Skills, Knowledge & Experience

  1. A legal qualification or training.
  2. Strong ability to understand complex problems, issue spot, and think through solutions or theories.
  3. A customer-focused approach, dealing with people in a compassionate, just and fair manner.
  4. Clear, concise, logical and practical approach to issues.
  5. Strong organisational and administrative skills.
  6. Excellent writing and drafting skills.
  7. Excellent IT skills.
  8. Excellent telephone manner.
  9. Strong ability to collaborate effectively within a team.

 

Desired criteria, qualifications, skills, knowledge & experience

The ideal candidate will have experience of working for a regulatory authority, with particular experience in providing advice, and supporting the work of committees.
